A Community’s Help Needed, Smithers RCMP Appeal for Key Witness in Hospital Incident

SMITHERS, B.C. – The Smithers RCMP is making a direct appeal to the community for help in locating a key witness to an indecent act that took place at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital nine months ago, on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Investigators are urging the witness, a woman who reported the incident to hospital staff at the time, to come forward and speak with them directly.

Why the Appeal is Happening Now

This public appeal has become necessary due to a difficult but common legal situation. While the hospital did the right thing by reporting the incident to police, privacy laws prevented them from sharing the witness’s personal information. This has left investigators without a way to contact the one person who saw what happened.

Why This Witness is So Important

In any investigation, a direct, first-hand account is crucial. Second-hand reports, while helpful, often lack the specific details and context that only an eyewitness can provide. For an investigation to move forward successfully, hearing directly from the person who was there is often the most critical piece of the puzzle.

“We are looking to speak with the person who witnessed this incident so we can better understand what occurred,” a Corporal with the Smithers RCMP said in the original release. “Your information could assist our investigation.”

    A Direct and Sensitive Appeal

Police understand that revisiting a difficult event can be challenging. However, they are encouraging the witness to please make contact. Her information will be handled with sensitivity and could be the key to resolving this file.

The RCMP is also asking the community to share this story. It’s possible the witness is unaware the police have been trying to find her. By sharing this appeal, a friend, family member, or the witness herself may see it.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233 and quote police file number 2024-3712.
