PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – A propane leak at a terminal on Ridley Island led to a full-site evacuation and temporary suspension of all operations this morning, though the situation was quickly contained and the island has since reopened.
At approximately 6:20 a.m., an unintended release of propane occurred at the AltaGas Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal. The incident resulted in a visible vapor cloud forming above the facility, prompting an immediate halt to all terminal operations. According to AltaGas, all safety and emergency protocols were activated, leading to the full evacuation of the site.
By 8:47 a.m., the source of the leak was successfully contained and isolated. AltaGas’ emergency response plan was stood down after the source was secured. The company stated that its primary focus was on “the safety of people, communities and the environment.” Continuous air quality monitoring was initiated, with AltaGas reporting no levels of concern. Favorable wind conditions in the area were also noted for helping to disperse the vapor cloud.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority confirmed that all safety and emergency procedures were followed and that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. With the situation now stabilized, access to Ridley Island has resumed, and terminal operations are in the process of returning to normal.
AltaGas is continuing to work with government, regulatory agencies, and local communities as they resolve the situation and prepare to fully resume normal operations.
