PRINCE RUPERT, BC – June 4, 2025 – The City of Prince Rupert is calling on all residents and organizations to get active this June as it competes in the 2025 ParticipAction Community Better Challenge. This national initiative aims to find Canada’s Most Active Community, with a grand prize of $100,000 available to support local physical activity and sport initiatives.

Throughout the month, Prince Rupert’s Recreation and Community Services Department, in collaboration with numerous local organizations, is offering a diverse calendar of free events and activities designed to get everyone moving and logging active minutes for the city.

“To help rally and win the grand prize this year, we need as many people as possible to participate! Residents, organizations and the City can log active hours throughout the month to potentially win up to $100,000 toward local facilities and programming,” the City stated in a recent announcement.

The challenge encourages all communities and individuals across Canada to track their physical activity. The more active minutes logged under Prince Rupert’s postal code on the ParticipACTION website, the higher the city’s chances of winning the coveted title and prize money. In addition to the national winner, prizes are also awarded to the most active community in each province and territory.

The local lineup in Prince Rupert features free programming for all ages and fitness levels. Activities include carpet bowling, tai chi, rugby and lacrosse sessions, junior golf, volleyball, trail walks, cricket, floor hockey, and chair yoga. Popular offerings like Zumba, pickleball, swimming, art sessions, and knitting/crochet meetups are also part of the extensive calendar.

One of the key partners, the North Coast Mountain Bike Association (NCMBA), will host a ‘Pop Up Bike Park’ in the Civic Centre arena on several Mondays in June from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

“One of our club’s mission statements is to encourage participation in recreational cycling so we are thrilled to partner with the City of Prince Rupert through Participaction,” said Craig Rimmer, NCMBA Board Member. “Movement, exercise, and organized recreation are so important to any community and the North Coast Mountain Bike Association is excited at the chance to contribute in a fun and meaningful way.”

    How to Get Involved:

    • Individuals: Sign up on the ParticipACTION website (participaction.com) and track your active minutes throughout June. Every minute counts towards Prince Rupert’s total!
    • Organizations: Register your June physical activity programs, events, or initiatives on the ParticipACTION website and track the number of participants.

By participating in any of the free local activities, residents will also be entered into a grand draw prize.

The complete schedule of free events in Prince Rupert and further registration information can be found on the City of Prince Rupert’s website at www.princerupert.ca. Residents can also follow the City’s social media channels for updates.
