Final Curtain Call: Prince Rupert’s Only Movie Theatre to Close This Sunday

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – The credits are set to roll for the last time at the Famous Players Cineplex in Prince Rupert, as the city’s sole movie theatre has announced it will permanently close its doors this Sunday, June 15.

The closure marks the end of an era for local moviegoers, who have relied on the theatre for big-screen entertainment for over four decades.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to close our Famous Players Prince Rupert location,” the Vice President of Communications at Cineplex Canada said in a statement. “We’re grateful to the community for their incredible support over the past 43 years and would like to thank our incredible employees whose dedication has made this location so special.”

The company had previously announced in April that the property was being put up for sale, creating uncertainty about the theatre’s future. The company has not disclosed any details about the sale or the future of the property.

For its final week of operation, the theatre is giving residents a last chance to enjoy a movie on the big screen, with showtimes for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Lilo & Stitch, and Karate Kid: Legends.

The closure leaves a significant gap in the city’s entertainment landscape and marks the loss of a long-standing community gathering place.
