Smithers, BC – June 3, 2025 – An individual suspected in connection with a series of small fires near a local school has been identified, the Smithers RCMP announced today. The identification comes after a public plea for assistance that included the circulation of surveillance images.

In a statement released at 12:27 PM PDT on June 3, 2025 (File # 2025-1810), the Smithers RCMP confirmed the development. “As a result of media coverage and support from the public, the individual has now been identified,” the release stated.

The initial investigation focused on two incidents where the contents of garbage cans were set ablaze near the Bulkley Valley Christian School. These fires were reported to have occurred between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM on both May 31st and June 1st.

Police had previously released surveillance images showing a man walking two dogs, who was believed to be potentially responsible for lighting the fires. The Smithers RCMP had appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the man’s identification.

Following the successful identification, the RCMP has removed the original media release and the associated images.

Cst. Jocelyn Foidart, Media Relations Officer for the Smithers RCMP, expressed gratitude, stating, “We thank both the media and the public for their support.”

Further details regarding the investigation or potential charges have not been released at this time.
